Edelman Ranked #1 Four Years in a Row

Ric Edelman has been named Virginia’s #1 financial advisor by Barron’s, the weekly financial publication, in its 2013 Top Advisors Rankings by State(1). It’s the fourth consecutive year that Edelman received the top honor. Barron’s has also ranked Edelman the #1 Independent Financial Advisor in the nation three times in the past four years(1).

Edelman is Chairman and CEO of Edelman Financial Services, which serves nearly 19,000 clients in Virginia and across the country(2). Remarkably, EFS has perhaps one of the lowest client account minimums – $5,000 – of all the advisors ranked on the “Barron’s Top 1000 Advisors” list. While many advisors pursue only the wealthiest Americans, Edelman and his firm happily serve the 99% of America who are ignored by many advisors. Consumers are able to work with his firm via 32 offices nationwide, including Alexandria, Ashburn, Fairfax, Tysons Corner and Richmond in Virginia, or via Edelman Online. “It’s disgraceful that many advisors choose not to help people who are trying to save for college and retirement,” said Edelman. “We’re happy to help people become wealthy, not just help the wealthy stay that way.”

Ric and his wife Jean founded Edelman Financial Services 25 years ago in Fairfax, which still serves as the firm’s headquarters. They started their firm after seeking financial advice that turned out to be crooked. “A local advisor told us to lie on our mortgage application,” recalls Edelman. “That’s when Jean and I decided to become advisors. We would teach ourselves how to succeed, and then share what we’ve learned with others, so no one else would have to go through our experience.”

Their mission to educate and serve consumers continues today. For more than 20 years, Edelman has hosted what is now the longest-running radio show on WMAL 630 AM and 105.9 FM, which also airs in 63 markets around the country. He’s on television too – after 15 years as host on Newschannel 8, he is now entering his third season as host of a weekly program airing on Public Television. He is also one of the best-selling personal finance writers in the country, with seven books, including a #1 New York Times bestseller. Long known for his ability to blend financial education with entertainment, Edelman’s radio show was ranked the #2 most important weekend-only talk-radio show in America by TALKERS magazine in 2012(3).

The firm is presenting its new seminar, “Investing for 2013 and Retirement” in Richmond (3/19) and Fairfax (3/21). More information can be found on the live events page on RicEdelman.com.

1. According to Barron’s, “The formula [used] to rank advisors has three major components: assets managed, revenue produced and quality of the advisor’s practice. Investment returns are not a component of the rankings because an advisor’s returns are dictated largely by each client’s risk tolerance. The quality-of-practice component includes an evaluation of each advisor’s regulatory record.” Only advisors who apply are ranked. “The Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors” was published Aug. 27, 2012; Aug. 28, 2010; and Aug. 31, 2009. “The Top 1,000 Advisors Ranked by State” was published Feb. 18, 2013; Feb. 20, 2012; Feb. 21, 2011; and Feb. 22, 2010.
