On March 19, leading mattress sales review company, Online Bed Quilt, responds to an article published by Fox News, which looks at a new study suggesting less sleep makes people eat more.

According to Fox News, a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder found that less sleep could contribute to weight gain. According to the study, people who are not getting enough sleep have to eat more to provide energy for the extra hours they are awake. So while sleep deprivation does not directly cause weight gain, it can be a side effect.

Study participants, eight men and eight women, slept as much as they wanted for three days, up to nine hours per night, while researchers monitored the calories consumed and burned each day. After three days, participants were split into two groups, one being limited to sleeping five hours per night. The results found that participants burned five percent more calories when their sleep was limited to five hours, but they also consumed six percent more calories than those who slept longer.

Researcher and University of Colorado physiology professor Kenneth Wright says, “Just getting less sleep by itself is not going to lead to weight gain, but when people get insufficient sleep, it leads them to eat more than they actually need.”

Justin Maas, a representative from mattress sales review company Online Bed Quilt, says the key to prevent weight gain is to practice healthy, routine sleep habits. Maas says one way to do this is to purchase a new bed or modify the one you already have. “One of the main reasons people suffer from a lack of sleep is because they are uncomfortable,” he says.

Maas says if someone is trying to lose weight, they should also make sure they are sleeping on a comfortable surface. “Weight loss systems often forget how important sleep is,” he says. “To ensure your body loses weight, you should look into purchasing comfortable bed products that support your body. It might not help you lose weight necessarily, but it will help your body regulate itself and prevent weight gain due to a lack of sleep.”
