Recent reports announced Facebook’s action against the conservative group “Chicks on the Right”. Award-winning internet marketing company and social media agency fishbat, Inc., issues a response, asking social media users, “Is social speech freedom of speech?”

On March 19, Internet marketing company fishbat, Inc. responds to the controversial activity revolving around Facebook’s actions against conservative group “Chicks on the Right.”

According to World News Group, Facebook shut down the page of conservative group “Chicks on the Right” last month “after it posted a blog post criticizing White House spokesman Jay Carney,” allegedly violating Facebook’s terms of use. Chicks on the Right did admit to having used a vulgar word in its post, reports the article, but “Todd Starnes of FOX News noted that dozens of liberal-leaning groups do not receive similar treatment when they use vulgar words to criticize conservatives.”

Conservative social media blackouts are becoming more common on a variety of platforms – including Twitter and Google-owned YouTube. Problems frequently arise when users that disagree with the viewpoints of other users choose to report them as spam. The article suggests that organized “flagging campaigns” will overwhelm sites like Facebook and Twitter’s algorithm-based systems, automatically shutting down the flagged sites with no public explanation.

“The right to free speech is a powerful weapon,” comments fishbat CEO Clay Darrohn. “There are rules to using this privilege that should be acknowledged and respected. You can’t cry fire in a crowded room, can you? Putting people in danger or taking advantage of any freedom can be just as dangerous as taking away rights.”

Darrohn asks social media users if they believe that their accounts are void of any rules put in place by social media sites like Facebook. “Is social speech freedom of speech? Can you say what you want even if you sign the dotted line when using sites like Facebook? I think not.”
