What can you say? This bawdy, naughty R-rated musical about religion continues to bring box office bliss.

The Book of Mormon opened just over two years ago and has been a runaway success ever since. This is particularly true at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in New York, where the musical played to a 102.6 percent capacity last week.

Once again, it was the highest draw for the week on Broadway. Cinderella was next with 100.9 percent, followed by Lucky Guy, Wicked, and the Lion King. (Source:

The nine-time Tony Award-winning musical currently has three productions performing concurrently at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in New York, the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago, and the Fisher Theatre in Detroit.

While the New York and Chicago productions continue, the production currently in Detroit wraps on March 24, 2013.

The cast then performs at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from March 26 through April 7, 2013. After a run of performances in Boston, the production begins an extended stay at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, Canada.

“The Book of Mormon is definitely not appropriate for younger children, especially those in their pre-teens,” said Felina Martinez at “Adult audiences appear to appreciate the show’s explicit and irreverent content, however; and, we continue to see The Book of Mormon at the top of our most popular tickets list.”

“Performances were very successful in Minneapolis, St. Louis, Rochester and now Detroit. Upcoming runs in Boston and Toronto are booked, while productions in New York and Chicago will continue to perform at their current venues,” said Martinez.

“We’re proud to be able to offer fans a complete selection of tickets to all three productions, with a worry-free guarantee to protect their purchase,” said Martinez.

“To access the continuously updated listing of cheap Book of Mormon tickets we now have available, customers can go to and search for Book of Mormon – then select their tickets,” said Martinez.

From the creators of “South Park and “Avenue Q”, Coloradoans Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the Book of Mormon continues to receive an almost perfect 4.9 rating from audiences, while critics give it a 4.7 out of five stars. (Source:

And while the play is certainly controversial, many report finding it ultimately comforting. Perhaps that’s why the faithful continue to flock to this sweet yet scandalous play.

The musical itself tells the tale of two mismatched missionaries sent to deepest, darkest Africa to spread the good word. Those who have seen "South Park" probably won't need any warnings, but the producers have issued a parental advisory due to `explicit language’. What happens to these asymmetric missionaries in poor, hungry, AIDS-plagued Africa is... well, R-rated.

To some reviewers, the musical’s content is both revolutionary and classic, hilarious and humane, funny and obscene. Other critics have called it blasphemous, scurrilous and more foul-mouthed than David Mamet on a blue streak – yet with a heart and soul as pure and pristine as a Rodgers and Hammerstein or Disney show.

Just how offensive is it?

Despite its adult theme and coarse content, Entertainment Weekly and the Salt Lake Tribute call it “surprisingly sweet”, while Vogue magazine writes that the show "starts out as a potty-mouthed buddy comedy" before "winding up as a kind of parable," and concludes that the musical's "dirty little secret is its big heart."
