Private Detective in Leeds comment on the importance of tougher fines for repeated fly-tipping in light of a recent BBC News article dated 14th March: Fly-tipping fines should be tougher, says sentencing council

Our company has seen terrible effects on the environment as a result of someone’s greed or laziness

According to a recent report by BBC News the sentencing council for England and Wales are pushing magistrates to impose greater fines for illegal fly-tipping from the tipping DIY waste to the far more serious dumping of toxic materials. Surprisingly fly-tipping crimes rarely go to court even though it has been an arrestable offence since 2005.

The report goes on to say that official figures show fly-tipping is decreasing but local authorities in England and Wales still cleaned up 800,000 incidents last year alone, which cost £40m of tax payers money. The guidelines say that magistrates should impose higher fines for more serious acts of environmental damage, such as dumping polluting chemicals or sharp hazardous objects. The maximum fine for a large company would be £2m reducing for smaller companies of between £450 - £2,000 for minor offences but going up to £70,000 for causing serious harm.

Private Detectives in Leeds believe these increased fines would help in two ways: firstly they will deter individuals and companies from tipping and secondly the fines would go a long way to paying for the clean-up of the mess left behind. Private Detectives in Leeds have provided evidence of repeated fly-tippers in the act of dumping waste on many occasions. The evidence has been collected in different ways such as, carrying out surveillance on the targets and recording all movements and activities or planting hidden cameras in the bushes at the most used dump sites to catch them in the act of fly-tipping.

Spokesperson for Private Detectives in Leeds, Ashlea Peters said:

“This is a terrible crime for the environment and the taxpayer and in my professional opinion these new guidelines for the punishment of those involved is a breath of fresh air. Our company has seen terrible effects on the environment as a result of someone’s greed or laziness.”
