Boar’s Head Brand®, one of the nation’s leading providers of premium delicatessen products, is proud to announce its continued support of the fight against diabetes by teaming up with the American Diabetes Association® (Association) to promote American Diabetes Association Alert Day® on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Alert Day is a one-day “wake-up call” asking Americans to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. For every Diabetes Risk Test taken starting March 26th through April 9th, 2013, Boar's Head will donate $5 to the Association, up to $50,000.

Boar’s Head is dedicated to the fight to Stop Diabetes® and has been an active supporter of the Association since 2010. Boar’s Head, along with the assistance of hundreds of independent distributors, work together with the Association to champion the cause of diabetes prevention by promoting healthy lifestyle options through good eating habits.

“Boar’s Head has a long standing commitment to providing families with healthy, nutritious eating choices that don’t compromise on flavor,” said RuthAnn LaMore, Director of Communications for Boar's Head Brand. “Awareness is critical when it comes to your health, and we strongly encourage Americans to take the Diabetes Risk Test on Alert Day, March 26th and throughout the entire year.”

Alert Day happens every fourth Tuesday of every March, and the American Diabetes Association encourages users to take the Diabetes Risk Test, which asks simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risk factors for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Their results are reported as a numerical score indicating low or high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Those at higher risk are encouraged to speak with their health care provider to learn more about ways to help reduce their risk or delay onset of the disease.

Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, and another 79 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes*. Although Alert Day is a one-day annual event, the Diabetes Risk Test is available year-round. Diabetes continues to plague many Americans and the statistics are astounding. Studies have shown that type 2 diabetes can often be prevented or delayed by losing just 7% of body weight (such as 15 pounds if you weigh 200) through regular physical activity (30 minutes a day, five days a week) and healthy eating. By understanding your risk, you can take the necessary steps to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
