The Association of Independent Information Professionals Meet in Denver, Colorado, April 3rd – 7th, for the 27th Annual Conference of this Worldwide Information & Research Professional Trade Group

Small, information-centric businesses are thriving. They’re competing more effectively with larger research, analysis, and information-centric companies, and they are always acquiring new and better ways to serve their clients. While the digital age has made it easier to build new skills and develop new info-centric products and services, it has also made it a lot harder to keep up with the latest tools, techniques, and client marketing strategies. So when the Association of Independent Information Professionals, (, a world-wide trade organization of researchers, analysts, information managers, and consultants, congregate every year for their annual conference, it’s cause to celebrate, rejoice and in this year’s case participate in a “Rocky Mountain Recharge,” to strengthen personal and professional ties to their fellow AIIP members. From April 3rd – April 7th, this year’s group of Association of Independent Information Professionals Conference attendees can expect four days of camaraderie, networking, educational programs, resource development and vendor training when members from around the world converge at the Denver, Colorado Westin hotel for this year’s annual confab and retreat.

“We get invigorated and reignite the enthusiasm for the important and valuable work that we do,” says Scott Brown, President of the Association of Independent Information Professionals. Brown, who represents more than 500 members worldwide, adds, “Our colleagues are often very small businesses or solo practitioners. We love the flexibility and independence that this brings, but we’re spread out around the world and we’re often doing very highly specialized work, which can sometimes lead to feeling isolated. The opportunity for us to get together every year to share the latest trends in research, explore best practices and even more importantly, have the time to spend with other practitioners, all of whom thrive on the camaraderie and positive energy at our annual conferences, is an annual high point for our members.”

Highlights of this year’s conference include prominent speakers who will invigorate attendees with fresh new ideas on marketing, branding, and research tools and techniques, as well as pre-conference workshops designed to enhance work productivity and increase bottom line performance for this group of mostly very small business and solo practitioners. Kicking off the meeting is Keynote Speaker, Debra Fine - “The Fine Art of Small Talk”
Debra Fine developed The Fine Art of Small Talk to teach technically oriented professionals conversation skills, relationship building techniques, and business networking approaches. Debra’s programs are held regularly for Fortune 500 firms, educational institutions, and organizations in finance, law, health care, real estate, government, and engineering. Her bestselling book "The Fine Art of Small Talk: How to Start a Conversation, Keep It Going, Build Networking Skills – and Leave a Positive Impression" (Hyperion) received excellent reviews in Library Journal and USA Today and was the subject of feature stories in New York Times and Chicago Tribune. Debra’s latest book in the Fine Art series is "The Fine Art of the Big Talk: How to Win Clients, Deliver Great Presentations, and Solve Conflicts at Work" (Hyperion). Keynote Speaker #2: - Erika Napoletano presents “The Power of Unpopular: A Guide to Building Your Brand for the Audience Who Will Love You (and why no one else matters)”
Writer, blogger, and business strategist Erika Napoletano will ruffle the feathers of conference attendees as she helps fine tune your business and online marketing strategy, brand development, social media tactics, and strategies to help develop lasting relationships with customers and clients.

Speaker #3: Mary Ellen Bates – “Getting Paid What You’re Worth: Painless Negotiation Skills”
Presented by two-time past President of AIIP, Mary Ellen Bates, a highly-regarded information professional, confesses she is not a born negotiator, but she learned how - which is why she loves talking about how to negotiate painlessly. Mary Ellen offers tips and techniques for negotiating effectively with clients about budgets, rates, and projects. Speaker #4: Linda Stacey – “Rocky Mountain Recharge”
In an interactive session, Linda Stacy shares the results of her research on "why and how" business professionals recharge. Speaker #6: The 2013 Roger Summit Award Lecture presented by Aaron Templer
The Program: “Leading in a Social World: An unexpected look at the social web through the lens of leadership”

Managers of brands and reputations must think of themselves as leaders. After all, doesn’t a great brand or reputation do what a leader does? Inspire people to take action - buy, vote, refer, hire? Leading in a Social World uncovers the principles of building social capital - the strategic context behind what drives the social web.

The Roger Summit Award:
The award, given by the Past Presidents of AIIP, is presented to “an individual who will inspire and challenge AIIP members, thus contributing to the organization’s continuing education and development.” The award is named after Roger Summit, founder of Dialog (, the world’s first online, multi-data base information retrieval system to be used globally.

Speakers #7: Presented by: Debbie Bardon & Ellen Naylor; “Beef Up your Primary Research Skills”
Presented by two AIIP members, Debbie Bardon and Ellen Naylor, this program will improve your people collection skills in competitive intelligence as two veterans share best practices and techniques to get sources to open up to you. Learn how to find prospects using social media and other resources. Become more comfortable with primary collection by using techniques to warm up phone prospects. Learn how to be more observant and how to cue into your target’s answers, tone of voice, and unspoken words. Find out when to probe and when to be silent. Debbie and Ellen share some ways to get into the right frame of mind physically, mentally, and emotionally before dialing.

Speaker #8: Presented by Marge King – “How My Newsletter Makes Me Money”
Presence in clients' minds is a marketing concept Marge King first heard explained at a previous AIIP Conference. Since that time, she has looked for ways to document her company’s presence in her clients’ minds. Marge, another AIIP past-president, discusses the use of her company newsletter to do so and the return on investment associated with it.
