Erica L. Perry of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, has been awarded the 2013 NBCC Foundation Rural Scholarship.

The NBCC Foundation, an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC), recently awarded a 2013 NBCC Foundation Rural Scholarship to Erica L. Perry of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. The rural scholarship is awarded to counseling students who commit to practicing in rural areas upon graduation.

The mission of the NBCC Foundation is to leverage the power of counseling by strategically focusing resources for positive change. The rural scholarship was created in 2009 to improve access to counseling services in rural communities, which suffer disproportionately from a lack of mental health care. Nearly 60 students from across the country applied for the five rural scholarships, and the NBCC Foundation Board of Trustees awarded an additional scholarship due to the high caliber of this year’s applicants.

As one of six 2013 rural scholarship recipients, Ms. Perry will receive $5,000 to support her counseling education and recognize her commitment to the underserved. Ms. Perry is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and is pursuing a master’s degree in school counseling at Slippery Rock University. Although she was raised in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Ms. Perry has a deep love for rural areas and the people of those communities. Ms. Perry is currently serving her rural community through her practicum at a local school. Upon graduation, she plans to obtain a position as a school counselor in a nearby rural area.

The NBCC Foundation has also awarded six $5,000 military scholarships to increase the number of counselors available to serve military service members, veterans and their families.

The NBCC Foundation plans to continue offering scholarships to increase the number of counselors in the areas where they are needed most. For more information or to make a gift in support of the Foundation’s mission, please visit
