Achieving high Medicare star quality ratings has become a top goal for Medicare Part D plan sponsors, and with continued emphasis on maintaining and improving patient adherence to medications, carriers are seeking innovative ways to connect pharmacists, physicians and other health care providers. While Part D plans made significant gains in their star quality ratings for 2013, partly driven by bonus payments and rebates, experts say there’s still room for improvement when it comes to adherence, for which there are now four star ratings measures. With major revenue and competitive positioning at stake — including the possibility of losing Medicare contracts if fewer than three stars are scored — plans must take every step possible to improve star ratings, win and retain customers, and continue participation in the Part D program. With the right management strategy, boosting adherence can be a viable way of raising star standings.

Strong adherence strategies are also becoming more important for commercial plans, particularly those operating in health insurance exchanges.
