Ieva Abolina, Director of Development of Renewable Manufacturing Gateway Inc. (RMG), was a featured speaker at Infocast’s Inaugural Reshoring Summit, held in Cleveland, Ohio on March 13-14, which brought together manufacturers, suppliers, governmental development organizations and business consultants. Ms. Abolina discussed RMG's value proposition for manufacturing companies that consider reshoring their operations to Western Pennsylvania. In addition to the regional advantages of the tri-state area, RMG offers strategic planning, financial modeling, business development and capital support to its manufacturing clients.

The dominant theme of the Summit was that new access to vast quantities of domestic natural gas are creating a game changing shift in America’s energy and manufacturing future. New business entities are re-building the US manufacturing legacy in the Marcellus and Utica Shale regions, due to increased demand for industrial and construction products and services. These new businesses enjoy a global sustainable competitive advantage, serving as catalysts to bring offshored manufacturing operations back to the US because of their capability to produce high-value products and services. Most important to RMG’s mission, these activities are creating new job opportunities for the unemployed and underemployed in economically blighted regions.

Ieva Abolina presented the region of Western Pennsylvania, Northern West Virginia and Eastern Ohio as a preferred location for energy-intensive manufacturing operations. Low cost of power, strategic location, well-maintained industrial infrastructure, skilled workforce and innovation centers promote the tri-state region as a world-class manufacturing hub. According to Ms. Abolina, RMG is pursuing an initiative to identify offshored manufacturers, and will conduct an outreach program to inform them about the regional advantages, capital sources and economic benefits of reshoring their operations to the PA-OH-WV region. It is important to emphasize that the total cost of ownership to manufacture overseas is often higher than to produce goods domestically, when considering all factors associated with profitability. Offshoring also exposes companies to a plethora of risks, including intellectual property theft, inferior quality, supply chain disruption, and communication errors.

RMG is a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to create jobs for the unemployed and underemployed in blighted areas of the PA-OH-WV region serving clean technology, renewable and alternative energy industries. RMG advises companies in these industries with respect to project development, project finance, capital markets strategies and introductions, business planning, commercialization, marketing, sales and strategic growth.
