The International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC) has extended its invitation to students to participate in the 2013-2014 Financial Plan Competition. The finalists and their faculty advisor will enjoy a 3 day, 2 night trip to Las Vegas where they will present their comprehensive financial plans to a team of judges.

The opportunity to showcase an academic program's students through national competitions is very valuable. This is an event well worth the time and effort on the part of student teams and their academic advisors. - Dr. John Grable, University of Georgia

The competition requires students or teams of students to construct a comprehensive financial plan for a fictional case study based on uniform data furnished by the IARFC. For consistent and objective judging, the students will all be required to use the same financial planning software contributed by the IARFC at no cost.

Students will prepare written plans that measure clients problems, relate them to family goals and financial attitudes and develop specific recommendations. The competition is to measure how effectively they analyze the issues and how creatively they offer solutions.

A panel of experienced and qualified Registered Financial Consultants will judge the submissions on the following criteria:

--Correct understanding of the case data and the “soft information"

--Understanding of the problems including any incomplete data

--Recommendations made (the logic, priority and suitability)

--Physical construction and design of the written plan

--Supplemental text and illustrations.

"For professionals who believe in the need for having a plan to guide an individual, it is important that young people entering the industry have knowledge and experience in how to develop a comprehensive financial plan," states Plan Competition Judge David Stitt. " A good plan informs, educates and motivates clients to take appropriate action in order to meet their goals."

Two winning finalists or teams will personally present their plans to a panel of RFC judges in Las Vegas as the final judging criteria. Each school, department, advisor and student that submits a plan will receive certificates or plaques recognizing their participation.

Students who wish to enter need to designate the appropriate faculty member through whom all information, distribution and communications are coordinated. Plan Submissions must be postmarked or shipped prior to January 31, 2014. More information can be found on the IARFC website, Financial Plan Competition page.
