The NBCC Foundation, an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC), recently awarded a 2013 NBCC Foundation Rural Scholarship to Jennifer M. Doherty of Schenevus, New York. The rural scholarship is awarded to counseling students who commit to practicing in rural areas upon graduation.

The mission of the NBCC Foundation is to leverage the power of counseling by strategically focusing resources for positive change. The rural scholarship was created in 2009 to improve access to counseling services in rural communities, which suffer disproportionately from a lack of mental health care. Nearly 60 students from across the country applied for the five rural scholarships, and the NBCC Foundation Board of Trustees awarded an additional scholarship due to the high caliber of this year’s applicants.

As one of six 2013 rural scholarship recipients, Ms. Doherty will receive $5,000 to support her counseling education and recognize her commitment to the underserved. Ms. Doherty is a graduate of the State University of New York at Oneonta and is pursuing a master’s degree in mental health counseling at Walden University. Currently employed as a senior case manager in her rural upstate New York town, she plans to provide the best counseling services possible after graduation. As a counselor, her goal will be to give clients the tools and supports to move forward in life and make meaningful change.

The NBCC Foundation has also awarded six $5,000 military scholarships to increase the number of counselors available to serve military service members, veterans and their families.

The NBCC Foundation plans to continue offering scholarships to increase the number of counselors in the areas where they are needed most. For more information or to make a gift in support of the Foundation’s mission, please visit http://www.nbccf.org.
