Horton Introduces the Modulator™ RCV250 Fully Variable Fan Drive

Horton presents the Modulator™ RCV250 Fully Variable Fan Drive, a more efficient engine cooling solution for global applications. It is an integrated belt-driven fan drive of lighter, compact design, engineered to turn larger fans that require higher torque.

The Modulator RCV250’s variable operation reduces fan noise, increases fuel efficiency and available horsepower. Its innovative design and lower parts count result in reduced initial, replacement and maintenance costs when compared to a viscous fan drive and drive hub combination. At the end of its life cycle, the product can be returned to Horton for remanufacturing—a plus for the environment.

The Modulator RCV250 is compatible with Horton’s fan technology, including WindMaster® Revolution High-efficiency, Hybrid-flow Fans. The new fan drive is directly controlled and managed by the engine’s electronic control unit (ECU). It can be combined with Horton’s Di Controller for precision cooling.

“The Modulator RCV250 Fully Variable Fan Drive is engineered to meet the increased cooling and airflow requirements of today’s hotter-running engines,” says Dave Hennessy, vice president of marketing and product management. “Modulator RCV250 fan drives are for use with larger fans that have more torque and inertia. They are integrated to work smarter and to save fuel.”

The Modulator RCV250 will be featured at the Mid-America Truck Show in Booth #34165. It will be available in full production this summer.

Product features include an integral fan speed sensor for close-loop control and a magnetic design that speeds reaction time, which in turn increases modulation and cooling. The Modulator is dynamically stable with a scalable design and features a high built-in thermal capacity. Its innovative reservoir, actuator and valve system allow faster response time and lower off-speed to maximize efficiency.

The bearing and product life of the Modulator is increased due to reduced bearing load. Stationary magnet coils eliminate the need for a bearing which reduces manufacturing and materials costs. Also, the front-located cover bearing reduces the temperature of the bearing, increasing grease life and supporting fan weight.

There is no need for an anti-rotation strap which simplifies customer assembly and makes an extra component unnecessary. The Modulator offers opportunities for advanced diagnostics capabilities.
