New Venture, Domaine de la Côte, To Produce Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays with Elegance and Complexity

"It's a dream come true to own, farm, and make wine from what I consider to be one of California's finest vineyards, " says Parr.

Rajat Parr, one of America’s most celebrated and respected sommeliers, has purchased Evening Land Vineyard’s estate holdings in the Santa Rita Hills appellation of California. Parr and a group of partners that includes winemaker Sashi Moorman have already assumed the day to day management and production of the 40-acre vineyard and winery in preparation for their first release this summer.

The new venture, Domaine de la Côte, will organically farm the remarkable high-density vineyards (4,000-7,000 vines/acre) planted for Evening Land Vineyards under Moorman’s direction in 2007. Parr and Moorman plan to develop an additional 20 acres of Chardonnay, using only California Heritage selections of Chardonnay and continuing the tradition at the estate of employing massal-selections for its vineyards.

“The word ‘côte’ in French means both ‘coast’ and ‘hillside,’” said Parr, who considers Burgundy his touchstone and standard for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. “Our estate’s new name is an allusion to both its proximity to the Pacific Coast and the stunning topography of the vineyards – a massive escarpment of shale that ascends to one of the highest elevation points in the appellation.” The first commercial releases of the wines from the estate’s individual vineyards (Tempest, Memorious, and Bloom’s Field) have already gained wide critical acclaim from wine critics and journalists.

"It's a dream come true to own, farm, and make wine from what I consider to be one of California's finest vineyards," said Parr, who has produced Tempest Vineyard Pinot Noir for Sandhi Wines, in which he is a partner. "The Domaine de la Côte will make wines that I believe will rank with the best of those coming from the appellation and beyond – Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays with the greatest elegance and complexity.”

Moorman added, “These vineyards have captivated my imagination since I planted the first vines. Raj and I share the same dream, the same vision for this project: To produce thrilling Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from one of California’s most exciting appellations."

Parr, the wine director for the Michael Mina restaurant group, and Moorman, the winemaker for Stolpman Vineyards, will continue to collaborate on Sandhi, the Santa Rita Hills winery they began in 2009.
