Colle Farmers Market comments on the efforts by teens in Novato, California to harvest an impressive abundance of organic food to be delivered to a community in need.

On March 20, Colle Farmers Market issues a statement on the recent efforts of Project Abundance, a teen-run community service group which harvests leftover crops for the community.

According to the article, published by Pacific Sun, the group of 30 youths has been so effective that they are now branching out from Novato to service all of Marin county. Their first project produced a staggering forty-eight pounds of lemons, with more assignments to come.

"Why is that food being wasted? Nothing is wrong with it,” says Haley Pavone, 11th-grader and founder of Project Abundance. “I read about farmers in the United States throwing out 20 percent of their crops because they weren't 'perfect' looking enough to be sold at a supermarket." Pavone has teamed up with the Marin Food Bank to assist with the distribution aspects of the project. “We just couldn't stand on a corner and hand out apples!” exclaims Haley.

According to the article, the organic food collected by the Marin Food Bank serves about 9,000 people a week, operating in 37 locations. The Marin Food Bank and Project Abundance encourage residents with empty lawns to “think about replacing your useless, cranky grass with some raised beds filled with local compost, some organic, heirloom seeds, and creating a 'victory garden.'”

Colle Farmers Market issues a statement on the efforts of the project, claiming, “It’s inspiring to see the youth of Novato help to promote the well-being of the entire community. Anytime you can see the younger generation notice a problem, and be so moved that they take action, it’s impossible not to support that.” As the health benefits of organic produce become more well-known, Colle believes that more people will begin to notice that “the organic movement is more than just a trend; it’s a lifestyle, and we believe people are really starting to see that and reap the benefits.”

Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all people who are living an organic and natural lifestyle.
