After recent reports of volunteers from Sun City Grand collecting used bicycles to give to the homeless in Phoenix, Arizona, Linus Bike releases a statement.

On March 21, 2013, city bike manufacturer Linus Bike releases a statement following an AZ Central article by Emilie Eaton announcing the 7th Annual Bicycle Donation Program for Phoenix Homeless, which is hosting a month-long used bicycle drive which will end on March 23.

According to the AZ Central article, “the program helps keep bikes from ending up in a landfill or from gathering dust in a garage.” The donated bikes go to the homeless, and help benefit those who need a means of transportation.

The article mentions that program coordinator George Wennerlyn started developing the idea for the program seven years ago. “Wennerlyn asked bike shops what they do with their old bikes. He learned about an ongoing program at the St. Vincent de Paul homeless shelter in Phoenix.” The original program was known as Shifting Gears, and taught youths how to rebuild bikes. They would work on their own bikes, and the extra ones would go to newly employed homeless people who didn’t have a way to get to work.

According to Wennerlyn, “If you’re down and out, a simple thing like a bike gets you from point A to point B. The people who donate the bikes feel pretty good that their donation is going to go to someone else rather than be discarded.”

China Reevers, representative of European-style city bike manufacturer Linus Bike, understands how important a program like this can be. “For a homeless person trying to get back on their feet, a simple thing like a bike could make a huge difference. It helps them get to work, helps them get around to other important places as well. If a bike is just sitting in a garage, it’s wasting away! This program gives new life to both the bike, and the new owner!”

Linus Bike is a California-based bicycle manufacturer that specializes in creating vintage style city bikes and commuter bikes. Not simply a bicycle company, Linus Bike sells a complete line of accessories for the environmentally conscious and for those who have a fondness for European style bicycles and the great tradition of European cycling.
