Not all accidents involving bicyclists and drivers make the headlines, but many lives can be seriously affected by them.

According to news reports, while biking in the south of France, Jalabert was hit by a car traveling in the opposite direction. The car “refused to give priority” to the cyclist and then hit him in the side. Jalabert suffered several fractures as a result of the accident according to USA Today posted on March 11, 2013. During his career, Jalabert won the jersey for best sprinter two times. He was also world time trial champion in 1997.

“Not all accidents involving bicyclists and drivers make the headlines, but many lives can be seriously affected by them,” said New Hampshire injury attorney John J. Tenn of the law firm of Tenn And Tenn, P.A. “Unfortunately, these types of accidents are far too common,” said Tenn.

According to Tenn, bike accidents are often caused by a driver’s failure to yield the right-of-way at an intersection to a cyclist. In addition, a driver’s unexpected decision to turn or merge into the path of a cyclist is another common cause of such collisions.

“Some drivers tend to view bicyclists as ‘in their way.’ This mindset often contributes to aggressive driving and not leaving enough room for bicyclists,” said Tenn.

Bicycle injuries can be extremely serious. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), 618 deaths and 52,000 injuries resulted from motor vehicle accidents with cyclists in 2010.
