Medicine is a constantly expanding field, in which new studies and advanced knowledge can rapidly and directly improve patient outcomes.

The volume of original research published in scientific journals around the world each year is astonishing. To keep up to date with the massive influx of new information, cutting-edge procedures, and clinical studies, the doctors at La Peer Health Systems have become actively engaged in a monthly journal club. By reviewing, discussing, and integrating the latest scientific developments into their own medical practice, patients at La Peer are benefiting from the absolute highest standard of care.

“Medicine is a constantly expanding field, in which new studies and advanced knowledge can rapidly and directly improve patient outcomes,” said Dr. Siamak Tabib, board-certified gastroenterologist in Los Angeles and Managing Director at La Peer Health Systems. “The La Peer journal club satisfies our responsibility and interest as physicians, to keep up to date with the most effective techniques in patient care.”

Each month, physicians from various departments at La Peer select ten of the most important research articles on a specific condition or procedure. In the Department of Gastroenterology's most recent journal club, Barrett's esophagus was the topic of choice. Barrett's esophagus is a disorder in which the lining of the esophagus is damaged by stomach acid. It’s a condition that’s often found in patients with chronic or severe gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Among the research selected for review were articles published in the some of the most prestigious medical journals, including the American College of Surgeons, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Digestive Diseases and Sciences.

One article, entitled “The Case for Endoscopic Treatment of Non-dysplastic and Low-Grade Dysplastic Barrett's Esophagus” reviewed the use of radiofrequency ablation therapy (RFA) for early-stage Barrett's esophagus. RFA is a cutting-edge technique used by gastroenterologists at La Peer to remove damaged tissue of the esophageal lining and to help prevent patients with Barrett's esophagus from developing esophageal cancer.

The La Peer physicians also reviewed the article “Endoscopic radiofrequency ablation for Barrett's esophagus: 5-year outcomes from a prospective multicenter trial,” which reported the results of RFA treatment in 60 patients with Barrett's. The study found that 92% of the patients experienced complete eradication of Barrett's esophagus without recurrence five years post-RFA treatment, confirming RFA as the most effective treatment for Barrett's esophagus.

Advances in our understanding of disease and therapy, as well as the pace of breakthroughs in medical technology, are unlikely to slow down. The La Peer journal club facilitates the translation of these scientific findings into tangible, life-changing results for our patients.
