How flexible is your workforce? (, the world’s largest online window covering store, is testing the limits of telecommuting potential after sending over 150 employees home to work remotely while their new 28,000 square foot office is being completed.

Stephen Riddell, Chief Operating Officer at, made the call to deploy a temporary company-wide remote work program in lieu of extending their lease or locating a temporary office space.

“Our Houston office move was the perfect time to test our call center’s telecommuting capabilities,” Riddell said. “As an employer, it’s crucial that our business model is flexible enough to handle everything from natural disasters to employees with sick children that need to work from home. ”

The team prepared for their weeks of remote working through a company-wide ‘black out day’ drill where employees ran a successful ‘work from home day’ dry run. Employees also attended training sessions on ergonomics, hardware implementation and at-home office productivity to maximize their new working environment.

“Our biggest goal for this experiment is to ensure that our customer service remains as strong as ever - no matter our locale,” Riddell said. “And it’s working. Our internal tracking shows us that, regardless of where someone answers their phone or email, customers can expect the same high level of service and seamless communication between internal teams to help them with their home décor projects.”

While at-home workdays were already available to some employees, tools like Yammer, the company’s Intranet, thoughtful training practices and hyper-communication have made the company-wide transition a profitable reality for the team.
