On March 27, 2013, Yumi Media, a food website devoted to delivering the latest and greatest in food news, recipes, and products to incorporate into your own healthy lifestyle, congratulates the students of California State University Northridge (CSUN) for their commitment to a vegetarian lifestyle.
A recent article in CSUN's Daily Sundial reports that students Heather Swann and Shlomit Ovadia have made an outward commitment to their vegetarian lifestyle and to protecting the environment. Both Ovadia and Swann are spreading awareness through the campus to gain a larger following.
“It’s our general responsibility to take care of the environment,” said Ovadia.
The Daily Sundial reports that Ellen Bauersfeld, registered dietician at CSUN’s Klotz Student Health Center, thinks that the campaign is a great way to educate the population about the many possible benefits of going meatless.
“There are certain diseases to lower your risk of getting including cardiovascular disease, some cancers, diabetes, obesity and possibly hypertension,” Bauersfeld said. “Plus, an increase possibly in your life span.”
Bauersfeld had said to the Daily Sundial that “the immediate perception is that people won’t know where to get their protein from, but [it's] not that difficult if somebody is really educated about food.”
“You can be as unhealthy as a vegetarian as a meat eater,” Bauersfeld said. “The key is education and doing it correctly.”
Yumi Media representative Justin Maas commented on CSUN’s vegetarian population, stating that they are an inspiration to all college students. “College is the place of rediscovery and self-definition. Both Swann and Ovadia are taking a stand on a particular lifestyle and trying to spread awareness – something that they both should be proud of.”
Maas adds that the college should provide Quorn meatless meals to help young vegetarians uphold their particular lifestyle. “Eating Quorn is an easy way to maintain a strict vegetarian diet. Quorn is amazingly delicious and doesn’t burn a hole through your pocket. More than that, it appeals to meat eaters as an easy and tasty meat substitute.”
