Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil Company, Bellucci Premium, Affirms Olive Oil Weight Loss Properties

Regarding an article published by the Olive Oil Times revealing a study about olive oil’s weight loss benefits, Italian extra virgin olive oil company Bellucci Premium issues a statement confirming olive oil’s satiety properties.

On March 28, Natalie Sexenian, the marketing manager for Italian extra virgin olive oil producer Bellucci Premium, comments on an article published by the Olive Oil Times, which discusses a study on how olive oil can help people eat less.

According to Olive Oil Times, a new study by the Technical University of Munich showed the fat in olive oil makes people feel fuller, resulting in the consumption of fewer calories.

Researchers participating in the study, Olive Oil Times reports, examined the effects of four different fats and oils like lard, butterfat, canola oil and olive oil. Volunteers were split into groups and had to eat one of the fats with low-fat yogurt every day for three months. Results showed the group who ate the yogurt with olive oil did not gain weight or see an increase in body fat. Out of all the other oils, the study says olive oil “had the biggest satiety effect.”

Sexenian says good Italian olive oil has a high oleic acid content, which could make people feel satisfied for a longer time. “There have been other studies done showing the link between oleic acid and fullness,” she says. “With all the heart healthy benefits of olive oil and evidence from this new study, it could be the key to a successful weight loss plan.”

Though oleic acid could be one of the big reasons for olive oils weight loss benefits, Sexenian says the new study suggests its smell can also keep people from eating more. “The interesting part about this study is the effect of aroma on diet,” she says. “Not only do the physical components of olive oil make people feel full, but the smell does as well. The aroma extracts put in the yogurt caused the volunteers to feel fuller, which prevented them from eating an extra 176 calories like the other group. A discovery like this could revolutionize the weight loss industry and also persuade more people to start cooking with olive oil instead of the other options.”
