This quarter, Foodie Call -- Charlotte’s largest local multi-restaurant marketing and food delivery company – announces the results of its Most Popular Pizza Topping poll. Foodie Call partnered with seven restaurants, ranging from California Pizza Kitchen to local joints like Zucca Pizza Tavern. Together, the team recorded the types of pizza toppings ordered for more than 1,000 pizzas.

“Being classically trained, it’s all about the portions of the toppings and how it’s topped,” said Executive Chef, Keith Ewing of Zucca Pizza Tavern. “Quality and the correct amount make all the difference. For us, it’s our award winning Victory Pie.”

The winner of the poll is a reigning contender known as a beloved classic – the plain cheese pizza. Create-Your-Own pizza comes in at number two, followed by pepperoni, which is requested one out of five times (or at a 14 percent rate) by hungry-pizza goers.

The results also proved the following: while most would love to travel to Hawaii, not everyone loves Hawaiian pizza. Simply put, from the 14 most popular pizza toppings, the Hawaiian was ordered the least.

Additionally, Foodie Call found that while Buffalo wings were a popularly ordered item, most did not order the Buffalo chicken pizza. Results showed that the Buffalo chicken pizza was ordered only 2 percent of the time, falling right behind one of the healthiest toppings, spinach. Surprisingly, the BBQ chicken, veggie, and white pizza also ranked near the bottom of the most-ordered list.

Pizza lovers could choose from more than 30 toppings when creating their pies, and could pick from a bevy of ingredients. The strangest toppings included meatballs and muffaletta, and other less common toppings included anchovies, broccoli, eggplant, pesto, and sundried tomatoes. These types of ingredients were chosen no more than 1 percent of the time.

Further, the combination of chicken, prosciutto, and bacon were only ordered combined less than 4 percent of the time, while basil, beef, green peppers, and spinach were individually ordered at that same 4 percent rate each.

More than 50 percent of the toppings picked for the Create-Your-Own pizza were composed of the top five popular ingredients, including olives, onions, mushrooms, and -- the most commonly paired duo – sausage and pepperoni.
