In the newest episode of fishbat Splash, fishbat’s content distribution manager, Takara Licausi, recaps the biggest digital stories from this week, including the viral marriage equality campaign and Facebook replies.

On March 30, Takara Licausi, the content distribution manager at fishbat, Inc., a social media agency, comments on the viral marriage equality campaign on social media, Facebook replies, and Apple’s acquisition of WifiSLAM in the latest “fishbat Splash” video.

The new “fishbat Splash” video first discusses how social media was used to spread awareness for the marriage equality campaign. As the Supreme Court heard cases regarding Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage act on Tuesday and Thursday, social media-powered activists expressed support on various networks. Hashtags #MarriageEquality and #Prop8 were trending on Twitter, while Facebook exploded with equality symbol photos.

“Everyone was changing their profile picture to the Human Rights Campaign’s red photo,” Licausi says. “It was a way for everyone to show their support. The picture went viral and had over 70 thousand shares.”

Licausi also says that Facebook announced it would be rolling out a new reply feature for brands and pages. That means brands would be able to reply to comments directly on the thread. “It just clears up a lot of confusion in the thread,” she says. “Responses are more organized and it could actually be a good way to interact with fans. It’s definitely a small change that makes commenting more seamless. For a social media agency that manages brand pages, it’s kind of a relief.”

The video ends with detailing Apple’s new acquisition of WifiSLAM, an indoor location tracker specialist. According to Tech2, WifiSlam can pinpoint locations using ambient Wifi signals within buildings. This means that the technology can allow users to check-in to specific areas within a certain location. Licausi says it’s a highly sensitive mapping tool that could help Apple’s marketing game. “Though Apple has not specified what it would do with this technology, there’s a good chance they could use it for marketing,” she says. “They could promote brand offers in geographically specific areas and hopefully increase user engagement.”
