Bluemont BBQ Bash

While we all enjoy the excitement of the contest, the best part is the energy, fun, and creativity inspired by great food and great people!

BBQ fans and 38 competitors from throughout the Mid Atlantic region look forward to the unique and popular Bluemont BBQ Bash and Blackberry Bonanza hosted by Great Country Farms on July 28. This official KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society) State Certified BBQ Competition is one of just a few Virginia events where the winners can qualify for the top national contests. Master judge Reid Bechtle explains “Top competitors look for attractive and well organized venues. The Bluemont BBQ Bash has quickly become known for its positive energy and fun activities for fans and their families.” An additional inspiration is the Taster’s Choice Competition, a more laid back version of the state contest with the proceeds going to feed the hungry.

Great Country Farms has partnered with recreational cooking school Cookology and Loudoun Interfaith Relief to provide each official competitor with an extra pork butts to cook. Ticket holders will enjoy five 1 oz samples of different BBQs and then vote for their favorite to win the Taster’s Choice Awards. Event sponsor Fortessa, Inc. is donating table ware and is hosting a separate area to ensure the state judges can focus on the food. Loudoun Interfaith Relief (LIR) Executive Director Bonnie Inman notes “For most children, the summer is a time for fun and frolic, but for children that are dependent on free or reduced meals while at school the days are a bit more grim. LIR provides an extra day of food to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner twice a month for families of school age children through our Summer Pack program. Our supplies of food are greatly hampered during the summer since most people are away. Thanks to the generosity of GCF, LIR will be one step closer to reaching our goal of providing nutritional food to all children seeking our services this summer.”

The weekend includes farm style family activities, wine tastings, and the Blackberry Bonanza Dessert Competition (open to all), The Farm’s pesticide free U-Pick blackberries will be at their peak as well as plenty of pre-picked berries. The Country Store features locally raised meat, dairy, produce, and artist’s gifts. Kids love the unique 5 acre play ground that includes a Giant Jumping Pillow, rope swings & mazes, tractor rides and more. Enjoy the annual Waiter’s Race and tie dying “Got Berries?” T-shirts for souvenirs. Owner Kate Zurschmeide remarks “While we all enjoy the excitement of the contest, the best part is the energy, fun, and creativity inspired by great food and great people.”
