Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW): “1 World, 1 World, 1 Week”— Message Not Falling on Deaf Ears

Two weeks ago Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) co-founder and CEO Linda Reinstein hosted the 9th International Asbestos Disease Awareness Conference in DC, followed by the observance of Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW). To top it all, on the first day of GAAW, Reinstein saw years of interaction with federal officials and Capitol Hill dignitaries rewarded when Surgeon General Regina Benjamin issued a urging Americans to learn about the dangers of asbestos exposure. (

GAAW’s weeklong agenda packed in discussions from some of the finest minds dealing with today’s growing asbestos crisis, including Dr. Richard Lemen (“Asbestos: What Is It?”), Dr. Arthur Frank (“Why Is Asbestos Bad For My Health?”); Dr. Regina Benjamin (“Statement by the US Surgeon General on National Asbestos Awareness Week, 2013”); and Dr. V. Courtney Broaddus (“Toxic Relationship to the Pleura: Update and Future Concerns”).

Highlighting ADAO’s new website feature, “Share Your Story,” Reinstein gave special thanks to asbestos cancer patients whose experiences were told throughout the week. Reinstein also extended gratitude to ADAO’s Platinum Sponsors, including Baron and Budd, and other generous supporters.

Reinstein’s message never sleeps. She tirelessly reminds audiences that the World Health Organization (WHO) reports 107,000 people die each year from mesothelioma and other asbestos cancers. ADAO’s message always encompasses the same thought: “The USA must stop importing asbestos and pass legislation to ban asbestos.” Reinstein’s mantra is: “We all know – asbestos kills. Tweet, post, and share #BanAsbestosNow!”

ADAO platinum sponsor Baron and Budd has combined forces with the independent non-profit group to bolster emergency research for earlier mesothelioma diagnoses and improved treatments, as well as push for the U.S. to pass a ban on asbestos. Baron and Budd managing shareholder Russell Budd, says, “More than 50 countries have passed a ban on asbestos, including every member nation in the European Union, but the United States is not among them. This sends a mixed signal to the rest of the world,” he says. “Especially for developing nations where laws are not as strict about asbestos use.”
