The Metropolitan Golf Writers Association will bestow the Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award on The Honda Classic when it convenes June 18, 2013, for its 62nd-annual National Awards Dinner.
The Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award is reserved for an organization that sponsors and sustains successful PGA Tour events while promoting the game and supporting the community. The National Awards Dinner will take place in Tarrytown, N.Y.
The Honda Classic takes place in late winter at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens and is the PGA Tour’s longest-running commercial sponsor. Waterfront Properties and Club Communities’ real-estate agents consider The Honda Classic one of the selling points for those looking to move into the northern Palm Beach County area.
From its beginnings in Broward County – the first installment took place in 1972, when the tournament was titled the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic – to its eventual move to Mirasol, another community of Palm Beach Gardens golf homes for sale, The Honda Classic draws worldwide media attention and has become one of golf’s elite events.
PGA National’s seventh installment of The Honda Classic will take place Feb. 24 through March 2, 2014. Players who have graced The Champion course have included Jupiter Island resident Tiger Woods, Palm Beach Gardens resident Rory McIlroy, the 2012 victor, Camilo Villegas, the 2010 winner, Jupiter resident Ernie Els, the 2008 leader, and Luke Donald, a member of The Bear’s Club who won The Honda Classic in 2006. All of them have been challenged by the Champion course.
The Champion course is revered for its Jack Nicklaus-designed links and treacherous Bear’s Trap – the nickname for the 15th, 16th and 17th holes. The Honda Classic annually attracts a world-class field and March’s event was no different. The 2013 winner of The Honda Classic, Michael Thompson, beat out Woods and McIlroy to earn his first victory on the PGA Tour.
The Metropolitan Golf Writers Association not only is bestowing the Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award on The Honda Classic for its ace tournament but also for its contributions to the community. The Honda Classic has raised $24 million in its 42 years for charity, most notably the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, as its primary beneficiary. Jack Nicklaus’ wife Barbara and son, Gary, are co-chairs of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation’s board of directors. The Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation opened its newest facility at Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens -- the Miami Children’s Hospital Nicklaus Outpatient Center.
The Metropolitan Golf Writers Association’s National Awards Dinner is supported by all of professional golf’s major entities, including the Champions Tour, the LPGA, the PGA of America and the USGA, in addition to the PGA Tour. Past winners of the Bing Crosby Tournament Sponsor Award include Cadillac, McDonald’s, Metropolitan Life and Shell Oil, as well as individual winners Yogi Berra, Bob Hope, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Ken Venturi. An estimated 600 attendees at the June gathering will help the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association generate proceeds for caddie scholarships in the northeast region.
