His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark and leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, will be traveling to Vienna, Austria today to lead the First Conference of Diaspora Churches that will be held later this week. His Holiness will also consecrate new churches in Western Europe and visiting Coptic Orthodox Christian communities throughout. This will be Pope Tawadros’s second overseas visit since his enthronement on November 18, 2012.
Earlier this month, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II made a historic visit to Vatican City to meet His Holiness Pope Francis. This was the first meeting of the two recently elected Church leaders and only the second Papal gathering in Rome in 1500 years. The last visit of a Coptic Pope to the Vatican occurred in May of 1973 when His Holiness Pope Shenouda III met with His Holiness Pope Paul VI (both departed) and signed an important Christological Declaration with the ambition to initiate ecumenical dialogue between the two Churches.
We pray for the safety of His Holiness during his travels and upon his return.
The Coptic Orthodox Church is of the Apostolic Faith and one of the oldest in the world, having been established by the Apostle Saint Mark in the middle of the first century and establishing some of the oldest traditions of Christianity. The head of the Coptic Orthodox Church is the 118th Pope of Alexandria and of the Holy See of Saint Mark, His Holiness Pope Tawadros II. The Coptic Orthodox Church continues to flourish with churches and communities established in 53 countries.
