CAO Summit 2013

The health care industry is poised on the edge of an analytics-driven transformation, and we are seeing real progress toward that goal.

The International Institute for Analytics (IIA), the leading research firm focused exclusively on serving the business analytics industry, announced today the recipients of its annual Excellence in Analytics Award. Usually reserved for one winner, this year’s award was given to both UnitedHealth Group and Intermountain Healthcare in recognition of each organization’s use of analytics to drive critical business outcomes.

This annual award acknowledges leaders who have gone beyond extracting business value from business intelligence tools, to develop advanced analytics capabilities in their organization. Last year’s winner was Procter & Gamble.

“The health care industry is poised on the edge of an analytics-driven transformation, and we are seeing real progress toward that goal. As we received nominations this year, we found excellence among both payers and providers. Instead of rewarding one segment over another, we decided to recognize excellence in both categories. UnitedHealth Group is making great strides on the payer side and Intermountain Healthcare is doing great work with clinical analytics on the provider side. They are strong choices for this year’s Excellence in Analytics Award and the honor is well-deserved,” said Thomas Davenport, IIA Research Director.

The award recipients were announced during the IIA Excellence in Analytics Award presentation and dinner hosted in Chicago on June 18 by Davenport. The awards dinner marked the opening of the CAO Summit (June 18-19, 2013), IIA’s signature professional gathering of analytics champions who come together to discuss and share the latest research findings and best practices in analytics. Designed to deliver tangible, thought-provoking strategies and tactics that can be applied to advance any analytics program, regardless of industry, this year’s CAO Summit attracted 150 invitation-only analytics leaders.

“Analytics enable UnitedHealth Group to create health and well-being programs and services that help people live healthier lives and make health care work better,” said Jean Rawlings, UnitedHealth Group vice president, Optum Data Management. “Teams of dedicated analytics professionals evaluate data and help drive the health care innovations that are at the core of our company. UnitedHealth Group is honored that the International Institute for Analytics recognizes our analytics capabilities with this award.”

“The team at Intermountain Healthcare is honored to receive the Excellence in Analytics Award from IIA. Incorporating analytics into our decision-making process to offer high quality care at sustainable costs is a top priority for Intermountain Healthcare and it’s terrific to see our team recognized for their hard work and dedication to analytics excellence,” said Lee Pierce, Intermountain Healthcare Assistant Vice President of Business Intelligence and Analytics.
