Women's History Month has its roots in the much older International Women's Day from 1911. When interest in honoring women of achievement grew, the day became a week, which in turn became a month-long recognition of women's contributions in history and currently.

Three designs in particular by Tees For Your Head celebrate women: the word clouds (collections of names) covering the world's top astronomers, science fiction writers, and artists.

The National Women's History Project has chosen the theme to highlight in 2013: Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination. The group decided to add "Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics" to the main theme, which coincides perfectly with Tees For Your Head's focus on geeky t-shirts for the arts and sciences, no matter which restroom a geek uses.

When women are not included in our collective history, part of the story is not being told. In addition, according to Myra Pollack Sadker, a researcher concentrating on documenting gender bias, "Each time a girl opens a book and reads a womanless history, she learns she is worth less."

The Astronomers Cloud tee, like the other word clouds, provides a puzzle as well as a visual design. First names of astronomers mean a guessing game (which Margaret would that be?) that can connect geeky astronomy lovers as they identify everyone listed on the shirt.

The same guessing game, or more likely heated debate, can take place when looking at the science fiction tee, the SF Writers Cloud. Included, of course, is Mary Shelley, the author whose work "Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus" is argued to be the first example of science fiction writing.

And celebrating both men and women in the arts is the Artists tee. By the way, which Louise is that?

Designer Karin Carter says "I made sure to include women in these shirts, and of course there were plenty of women who made important contributions to the fields I've made tees for." She goes on to say that "the women who paved the way, by first working for the vote and then standing up for equal treatment, have made life choices immeasurably richer for later generations of women and girls." (And Carter is grateful that she didn't have to ask her husband for permission to share her views.)

Science is making some progress in eradicating attitudes that used to hold women back, such as a belief that women were too constitutionally frail to be able to learn math and science, and thus should not be educated.

Carter says, "We've come a long way in the western world since women were considered chattel, could not own property, and could not enter into contracts. I can't wait for the day we reach true equality."

A t-shirt showcasing women alongside men is a tiny contribution to equality that can be worn proudly.
