The Otter Student Union is expected to open in the spring of 2020 as a place-making statement and a commitment to the campus’ vision of continued growth.

This marks a 10+ year vision of the campus and nearly 2 years of dedicated planning and design with the students, staff, Chancellor’s Office, design and subcontracting community to prepare for the building of this critically-needed campus asset - Selene Lenox, Vice President, Gilbane

Gilbane was honored to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the California State University Monterey Bay Otter Student Union project on April 16, 2018. This project will be delivered by the Gilbane | HGA team as a collaborative design-build effort. The 70,000 SF building will house Student Union programs with activity, meeting room, lounge, and food service spaces, a bookstore and retail environment, as well as student government, administrative and organizational support spaces.

“It has been exciting to prepare our design-build team for the construction of this Student Gathering space”, says Shaik Sihabuddin, Sr. Project Manager with Gilbane Building Company, “The collaborative approach to this project has prepared our team well to transition seamlessly from design to construction and we’re excited to get going.”

“As Shaik indicated, this event marks an important milestone for the student community here at CSUMB,” adds Selene Lenox, Vice President of Gilbane Building Company. “It marks a 10+ year vision of the campus and nearly 2 years of dedicated planning and design with the students, staff, Chancellor’s Office, design and subcontracting community to prepare for the building of this critically-needed campus asset.”

“This new Otter Student Union will provide much-needed space for student organizations and activities. As our university continues to grow and mature, we hope the activities in this new building will make each of our students feel an even greater sense of belonging here at CSUMB”, says CSUMB President, Eduardo M. Ochoa.
