“Beside Still Waters: Discovering Peace in the Midst of Your Child’s Addiction”: a redemptive handbook for parents and loved ones dealing with a child’s bondage to addiction. “Beside Still Waters: Discovering Peace in the Midst of Your Child’s Addiction” is the creation of published author Cherri Raws Freeman, a Wheaton-trained science teacher in full-time, Bible-based, Christ-centered addiction ministry with her husband Joe. Freeman is also the great-granddaughter of the founder of the oldest addiction recovery center in Whiting, New Jersey, and mother of five, two of whom struggled with addiction.
Freeman warns, “It is so easy for a mom to slip unknowingly into the addiction of codependency because we naturally take care of our kids, even after they get older. However, it is easy to allow our kids to become idols in our lives and most likely are completely unaware of it. We try to compensate for their problems and pick them up when they fall. When I paid my son’s fines and bailed him out of numerous situations, I thought I was helping him get on ‘level ground’ so that he could start making good choices. It didn’t happen that way, and I kept him from feeling the consequences of his choices. I thought I was doing the loving things but did not understand that my actions were motivated by guilt for choices I had made that had affected him.”
Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Cherri Raws Freeman’s new book is a compassionate and comprehensive guidebook for those who struggle to understand the depth and nature of their loved one’s bondage to alcohol and drugs, such as opioids, and ultimately to the root of the problem, which is self.
Freeman, who speaks vividly from experience, brings years of wisdom working in addiction recovery ministry to bring the reader to the still waters of God’s peace where they can find the critical knowledge, hope, and the life-affirming strength to continue battling for the lives of their loved ones.
