6 Yr Old’s Idea for App and Books to Inspire Children to Love Reading Launches on Kickstarter
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) October 14, 2014 -- Last year, James O’Donnell, who was six-years-old at the time, was frustrated by learning to read. After a difficult night of attempting to read, his father, Patrick, asked him what it would take for him to enjoy reading. Patrick, who is a best-selling author, wrote an adventure story with the four things his son said he would need to enjoy reading. James loved the story and wanted to share it with his friends, so the entrepreneurial minded six-year-old came up with the idea to turn it into an app and book series.
“Parents are a child’s first educators and it’s our responsibility to continue to educate, even if involves creating solutions to meet the needs of our children,” remarks Patrick O’Donnell, co-founder of Learn to Read Adventures. “It’s been amazing to see how something simple we did to help our child enjoy reading, thanks to his idea, now has the chance to inspire so many children to love reading.”
After confirming through focus groups with parents and teachers that there was a need and a gap in this style of book for young readers, the O’Donnell family set out to create the app and book series and thus Learn to Read Adventures was born.
These interactive, ‘choose your own path’ stories, filled with beautiful real-life images, take the reader to real places around the world. While inspiring children to love reading, this project also gives back by supporting artisans and protecting nature in the locations of the stories.
The beta version of the app is complete and has received outstanding reviews from the beta testers. “My son played on the app for an hour and loved it,” raved Stacey Porter, first grade teacher and mother of three. “We loved the option to make choices throughout the story and he reread the story several times to see all the different possible outcomes.”
Right now in the U.S., one in four children will grow up without learning how to read and 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. Learn to Read Adventures is on a mission to change these stats by inspiring children to love reading.
The Kickstarter campaign seeks to raise a minimum of $12,400 and offers backers some very creative rewards. The rewards include everything from a simple digital thank you pack to a real-life ‘choose your own path’ for a family adventure vacation. For this reward, the family will set out on an adventure of a lifetime, but they won’t know where they are going. The choices they make will determine where they go.
