Barnstone Studios Marks Move to Thurmont, MD Location With Open House, Homecoming, and Dedication Nov. 3 & 4
Barnstone Studios welcomes visitors to its official Open House at its new location on East Main Street in Thurmont.
THURMONT, Md., Nov. 1, 2018 Barnstone Studios will welcome alumni and visitors to its official Open House, Homecoming and Dedication 1-5 p.m. November 3 and 4 at its new location, 202 A East Main Street, Thurmont, Maryland, 21788.
The studio will showcase internationally-acclaimed original work by the late Myron Barnstone. It will also serve as the hub of the Barnstone Art Education Program, which continues Barnstone's life-long work of offering students a strong foundation in the basics of classical art.
Before he decided to lock away his own work and teach, Barnstone himself was lauded at exhibits in Paris and the United States. Concerned that contemporary art schools were abandoning the principles of geometric design that classical masters studied, Barnstone switched from painting to instructing. For 35 years, thousands of students attended his classes at Barnstone Studios in Coplay, Pennsylvania. Many went on to positions of prominence as painters, photographers, film animators, graphic designers, sculptors, professors, authors, and architects.
After Barnstone's death in October of 2016, his daughter Catherine "Cat" Barnstone Szafran, herself a photographer and Frederick resident, took over as director of Barnstone Studios. This past spring, she began revealing some of her father's 500 works in a 5-month revolving show at ArtistAngle Gallery in Frederick. Most of the pieces had been locked away for over half a century, and were never previously seen by the public.
With the opening of the Thurmont studio, for the first time, all of Barnstone's original pieces are together in a single location. Szafran will curate exhibits of Barnstone's work and coordinate future gallery shows in the US and internationally. She will also oversee the continuation of Barnstone Art Education workshops with videos Barnstone recorded in his classes, and live instruction by Barnstone alumni.
