Dr. Edward Buckingham is excited to welcome aboard Melissa Bender, MD as the facial plastic surgery Fellow for 2020. This competitive fellowship will focus on the wide breadth of aesthetic surgery, under the guidance of Dr. Buckingham, one of the country's most sought-after plastic surgeons.
AUSTIN, Texas, July 3, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Edward Buckingham, MD, founder of the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, is proud to name Melissa Bender, MD as his 2019 Fellow. This highly competitive, year-long training opportunity is facilitated through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). As a distinguished plastic surgeon with extensive experience, Dr. Buckingham will act as a mentor and teacher for Dr. Bender.
The AAFPRS Fellowship program has been in place since 1969. During this time, more than 1,300 surgeons have had the opportunity to learn and grow through AAFPRS's respected Fellowship program. Only the most distinguished of surgeons, with extensive experience and proven exceptional patient care, can act as leaders in the Fellowship program. The year-long Fellowship is designed to increase the confidence, skill and autonomy of the participant. Once the Fellowship is complete, a rigorous oral and written examination will be administered.
Each year, approximately 50 Fellowship opportunities will open across the country. Each slot is highly-sought after and thus, extremely competitive. To qualify for the Fellowship, applicants must have already completed their residency in otolaryngology or plastic surgery. After an intense interview process, the surgeons are matched with a Fellowship Director that holds similar interests in aesthetic medicine. This surgeon will then act as the Fellow's mentor for twelve months.
For the upcoming 2020 Fellowship cycle, Dr. Buckingham has been paired with Melissa Bender, MD. Dr. Bender is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, receiving her Doctorate of Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She went on to complete a coveted Otolaryngology Residency at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Bender is the author of multiple peer-reviewed articles and a leader in several ongoing research projects. Fluent in Spanish, in her free time, Dr. Bender enjoys running, hiking, cooking and reading.
