DHL Supply Chain hand-delivers gifts to its 2,000 truck drivers for 2018 National Truck Driver Appreciation Week
WESTERVILLE, Ohio, Sept. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- DHL Supply Chain, the Americas' leader in contract logistics and part of Deutsche Post DHL Group, is showing its appreciation for its roughly 2,000 truck drivers with custom rain gear, back packs and celebrations throughout this week, which is recognized as National Truck Driver Appreciation Week by the American Trucking Association.
From September 9 through 14, each driver at DHL Supply Chain sites across the country will receive a branded rain coat or backpack hand-delivered by site managers, along with a letter from their Vice President expressing the organization's gratitude for its skilled operators.
"This week gives us the opportunity to further celebrate the men and women drivers who help DHL Supply Chain think beyond today's shipment for our customers every day," said Anthony Eber, Human Resources Director Automotive, Engineering and Manufacturing at DHL Supply Chain. "We pride ourselves on being customer-centric, and our drivers are the critical component, which is why we look forward to celebrating them every year."
In addition to the branded gifts each driver receives, each site will have its own celebration event. The week-long celebrations include additional giveaways such as restaurant gift cards, tools, and other items to make time on the road easier. Most sites also provide cookouts, catering, or food trucks for commercial drivers to recognize the value they bring to DHL Supply Chain.
"When our drivers are out on the road, we don't get the chance to see them face-to-face or to tell them how much they matter," said Maria Rowland, General Manager, Atlanta Dedicated Fleets, DHL Supply Chain. "This week, though, we take the opportunity to make sure they know how much we value them by throwing a celebration in their honor."
At a time when the talent shortage in transportation is growing and competition for attracting and retaining drivers is stiff, additional incentives can make all the difference to drivers. However, DHL Supply Chain's transportation and talent acquisition teams recognize that gifts are only the icing on the cake when it comes to maintaining a strong and talented team of drivers.
"Though National Truck Driver Appreciation Week presents an extra opportunity to show our gratitude, it would not be genuine if we didn't support that gratitude in the ways that matter most," added Eber. "That's why our drivers have more home-time, competitive wage and benefits packages and safe, high-end equipment."
On average, DHL Supply Chain's drivers have about 50 percent more home-time compared to traditional over-the-road commercial motor vehicle operators. They also have opportunities for professional development through programs like Drive For Gold, a DHL Supply Chain incentive program where drivers can earn points for safe driving habits related to compliance, safety and accountability, and exchange those points for quality prizes.
Benefits like those are why drivers like Melanie Fortin still enjoy coming to work at DHL Supply Chain. "I've earned a lot from the Drive For Gold program including lawn and garden supplies, a lawn mower, car seats and a television. I'm saving up for a snow blower now," said Fortin.
