As a filmmaker, Dax Brooks always had a knack for surrounding himself with visionary talent. As a musician, he’s done the same: he’s found impressive collaborators who have helped him make “Only Human” the irresistible record it is. The entire Only Human EP was recorded at the Bomb Shelter studio in East Nashville with the resourceful Andrija Tokic, who drew praise for his work with the Alabama Shakes. The track was mixed by Jason Schweitzer, a specialist in modern soul who has worked with Macy Gray, Mayer Hawthorne, and Raheem DeVaughn, among many other hitmakers. For a mastering engineer, the singer turned to his brother Che Brooks, who played with Dax Brooks in the Questions, his first band.
As you might expect from a clip by an experienced director, the video for “Only Human” looks fantastic and tells its stories with absolute assurance and clarity. What might surprise you, though, is the amount of pure feeling Brooks captures and the raw, unvarnished humanity of the characters in the clip. Brooks shows us an elderly woman who has lost her partner, a dancer on the grind, and a couple in the middle of a final fight before a breakup. All struggle, all are deeply human, and all are worthy of our sympathy and respect.
