Infrasense Surveys Interstate Overpass Bridges in Chicago Suburb to Quantify and Map Surface and Subsurface Defects
CHICAGO (PRWEB) May 31, 2019 -- Last month Infrasense mobilized a two-person team to a suburb of Chicago, Illinois to conduct various non-destructive tests on three I-290 overpasses, one of which was a pedestrian bridge. One of the testing methods used was Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) which provides maps of rebar depth and rebar level deterioration. Another method, Infrared Thermography (IR) was used in conjunction with a high-resolution video feed to quantify and map subsurface delaminations, patching, and spalling.
The surveys on the two overpasses with vehicular traffic were collected using one of Infrasense’s custom field vehicles, implementing a set of 1 GHz horn antennas feeding into a SIR20 radar acquisition unit. The scan rate was regulated with a distance measurement instrument attached to the tire of the vehicle. The IR and HRV cameras, mounted on a frame on top of the vehicle, captured a series of images as the vehicle moved across the bridge decks. These images are stitched together into plan-view for subsequent mapping of defects. The pedestrian bridge required the use of a 1.5 GHz ground-coupled antenna feeding into a SIR 4000, with the IR and HRV data taken incrementally with a series of equispaced images.
