Manufacturer of Inground Pool Liners, LOOP-LOC, discusses 4 Kinds of Pool Algae and How to Combat Them
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., July 17, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Every pool owner wants a glistening, clear, blue pool, enticing them to just jump in on any hot summer day. However, suddenly, a rainbow of problems could arise--a rainbow of different colored algae. If pool water and surfaces aren't properly maintained, these colorful but unwelcome visitors could make a home in your pool. If algae does appear, manufacturer of inground pool liners, LOOP-LOC, tells you 4 types of algae to be on the lookout for and how to get rid of it.
- Green Algae
The most common form of algae, green algae can have blue-green, yellow-green or dark-green hues to it. This type of algae can attach to your pool walls or be free-floating in the water, but either way it causes your pool to become a hazy, green color. As soon as you see signs of this algae cropping up in a corner of your pool, set out to attack it to prevent it from rapidly spreading.
How to combat it:
Thankfully, green algae is the easiest to attack and prevent, with sufficient scrubbing, cleaning, and balancing your pool. As soon as you see signs of green algae, check your pool chemical levels to see what environment is allowing it to live, then start scrubbing it away. Once scrubbed, shock your pool by raising the chlorine levels above 3 ppm. After this, add a powerful dose of algaecide according to the instructions to prevent regrowth. This process may need to be repeated to kill off all the algae cells.
- Yellow Algae
Also known as mustard algae, this type is chlorine resistant. With a brown or muddy yellow color, yellow algae can look like built up dirt or sand. It doesn't spread as quickly as green algae, but being chlorine resistant, is harder to kill off.
How to combat it:
Unlike green algae, yellow algae cannot be removed by simply brushing it. However, brushing it away will remove the layer of protective slime over it and allow your treatments to kill off the algae. Make sure to properly balance your pool chemicals first and foremost. Shock your pool aggressively and make sure to keep scrubbing the algae to prevent the slime layer from growing. Apply generous algaecide treatments. These steps may, once again, need to be repeated to ensure all the algae has been eradicated.
- Black/Blue-Green Algae
Black or blue-green algae grows in shadowy cracks and crevices of a pool, and is more likely to grow on rough surfaces like plaster or concrete. Though black algae does not make your water less clear, you will notice black spots on the surfaces in your pool. It is also chlorine resistant, so normal chlorine levels will not inhibit its growth.
How to combat it:
Similar to yellow algae, you must scrub off the layer of slime protecting the algae underneath to allow your treatments to work effectively. After checking your water chemical levels, shock your pool aggressively, while continuing to ensure there is no slime build up on the algae. Treat the pool with generous amounts of algaecide according to instructions. These steps may need to be repeated as needed.
- Pink Algae
A reddish-orange bacterium that usually develops around a pool waterline, this algae is easy to manage and get rid of. It is also usually found on PVC pool surfaces.
How to combat it:
Pink algae is easy to combat; keeping your pool chemicals balanced and chlorine levels regular should keep this algae at bay, but if it appears, regular scrubbing and the occasional shock will keep it away from your pool.
