New Children’s Book Addresses Alternatives to Punishment for Students with Behavioral Issues

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (PRWEB) June 14, 2019 -- As an educator, Jon Konen wants to highlight the work of school principals and raise awareness for socio-emotional learning and self-regulation for all students. His new children’s book, “Benjamin’s Visit to Principal Reads’s Office—Again” (published by Archway Publishing), demonstrates how a new approach to being sent to the principal’s office and to addressing children’s mental health is ultimately beneficial.

Benjamin is a student who is sent to the principal's office after misbehaving in Mrs. Hardback's classroom; however, Principal Reads is not the normal principal. He uses 16 different strategies to support Benjamin with his reentry back into the classroom. The book lists 16 strategies in the back and can be useful for principals, teachers, parents and students. “Benjamin’s Visit to Principal Reads’s Office—Again” provides alternatives to normal punishment that can help students with behavioral issues.

With a raise in mental health awareness and training in schools, Konen believes that the book will be impactful. About the Author
Jon Konen is a father, husband, K-6 elementary principal and freelance writer in Great Falls, Montana. He has taught most grade levels K-6 and has been a K-12 principal in a rural school. As a 5th grade teacher in 2010, he won the Presidential Award for Elementary Math and Science Teaching. As a principal, his school won the 2012 Blue Ribbon Award. In 2018, he won the National Distinguished Principal Award. Konen has also written two guides for educators, “An Educator’s Guide to Combat Bullying & Bully Prevention” and “Teacher Evaluation: A Transition Guide to Exemplary Performance.”

Illustrations for the book were created by Ray Kelly. Kelly is an illustrator, artist and cartoonist. For the past 27 years he has run Kelly’s Signs in Great Falls, Montana with his family. He illustrates, paints and maintains his original cartoon blog, spitewall.com, in his spare time.
