About the author
Born in Louisville, Ky., in 1931, John S. Sutton Jr. is a race horse enthusiast and former bourbon distillery executive whose unique experiences allowed him to attend every Kentucky Derby since 1940. Sutton earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Louisville and served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, when he was honorably discharged. He went on to earn an MBA in Mathematics from the University of Louisville in 1965. Sutton spent 35 years in the distillery industry, making his way up the corporate ladder from technician to vice president and director of purchasing.
