By the great cypress tree stands the king of the jungle consulting his flock. The Lion King has long struggled to make this kingdom a country of peace for a long time so that everyone lives together — the wolf with the lamb, the hen with the fox. One day, a mouse decides to meet the mighty king to restore his lost prestige in the forest. He asks the Lion King to accompany him on a walk through the woods so that everyone may acknowledge his existence. Upon their return, the generous king informs the jungle council that he will travel for a day or two, and must elect a suitable replacement. There was disagreement at first, but there is no way around it. Each candidate presented their good qualities and strengths, and revealed their rival's weaknesses. Most failed in securing the congregation's approval — except for one animal, who won the majority of votes.
"There are two important elements that prompted me to write this novel," Matar shares. "The first is a question: who should rule in society? Is he strong or wise? Is it permissible to rule the weak? As for the second matter, it is my observation of the events of the so-called Arab Spring, in which many governments fell, and weak political forces wanted to ascend to power under the slogan of religion and justice derived from the rule of the religious people."
When asked what he wants readers to take away from the story, the author says, "I want the readers to live the pleasure of this work, and for each person to reflect on the meaning of his existence, and is he really aware of what is going on around him? And where does he stand in the open space in which good wrestles with evil?"
