Rehab 4 Addiction Outlines Why Not Enough is Being Done to Stop the Opiate Epidemic

The U.S. Census Data and Statistics forecast that as many as 650,000 people will die within the next decade — the equivalent of the entire population of Baltimore, so drawing attention to this could help to save lives.
Oliver Clark, the CEO of Rehab 4 Addiction, said: "Clearly not enough is being done. We receive thousands of calls and emails from concerned parents, spouses and other loved-ones who just don't know what to do.
"Putting more people in prison seems to be the default answer but it's one that clearly isn't working."
Why more needs to be done
Support for funding the opiate crisis can be found across all parties. 77 percent of Democrats and 65% of Republicans are said to support more funding to tackle the opiate epidemic. It's believed that doing more to solve the opiate epidemic could have been an easy win for those in power since it is clearly an issue that is relevant to their base.
"In 2017, the opiate commission published two sets of proposals to help curb the epidemic. the US Government reacted to one of those proposals by declaring a public health emergency. This was the commission's top recommendation. However, the US Government has done little to address the final set of 56 proposals issued by the commission" said Oliver Clark.
"Many of these proposals require financial outlay in helping to solve the opiate epidemic, most notably in funding addiction treatments by streamlining federal funding in this area."
"In March 2018, the US Government announced a vague plan to tackle the crisis. This plan ignored the commission's public health-oriented proposals, and instead concentrates on harsher criminal justice measures. One of these measures is using the death penalty more for drug traffickers. The opiate commission did not recommend this measure."
A potential solution
Experts do not believe measure that will increase border security will have any effect on the opiate epidemic. What's needed is more treatment, including harm reduction measures. This is when addicts are given medications such as methadone and buprenorphine.
"Trump and his administration seem to have done much to make this epidemic even worse. For instance, he tried to cut the budget for the Office of National Drug Control Policy by 95 percent" said Oliver Clark. "The administration supported the repeal of the Affordable Care Act and they are proposing to cut dislocated workers grants by 40%."
