S.S. Custis empowers rape survivors to step forward as she shares her story
"It Didn't Break Me: It Changed Me" is set to be on the market as #MeToo movement is on the rise
SALISBURY, Md., Dec. 18, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- After years of living with "shame" due to the assault that affected her life, S.S. Custis felt empowered to share her experience as she releases her book.
"It Didn't Break Me: It Changed Me" (published by AuthorHouse) details the night she was sexually assaulted by a group of friends during a college party of her senior year. That time, only those men and her roommate were aware of the incident and never reported it. Though she felt that she dealt with it and moved on, the incident changed her life in ways that she did not realize it for years. It affected her relationships with other people. "Over time, I began to realize that by hiding this incident and not dealing with it, it had negatively affected practically all my relationships, with friends, significant others, and even co-workers. I had become so guarded that I was unable to establish truly healthy relationships and simply existed in my life without truly living it," Custis describes.
In America, a woman is sexually assaulted every 73 seconds. College women who are 18-24 years old are three times more likely to experience such violence than women are in general as per U.S. Department of Justice. Just like Custis, it is found in 2010 that 95% of campus rape cases go unreported according to American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
As a step forward, "It Didn't Break Me: It Changed Me" became a tool of empowerment as Custis imparts to fellow survivors that what happened to them is not their fault. She encourages them to step out of the shadows of shame and humiliation of rape. Today, because of the #MeToo campaign, more women are stepping forward and report the assault, rather than remain as "victims."
