Sunset World Group Updates Sunset Royal 2020 Sea Turtle Season Information
When Sunset World Group opened its first hotel in Cancun, they realized that not only was it located on a beautiful beach, but that this particular beach was where many sea turtles came to spawn each year between May and November. Since then, females have been protected when they arrive to lay their eggs, and then their eggs and young are protected as well.

Since then, females have been protected when they arrive to lay their eggs, and then their eggs and young are protected as well.
However, it was not until 2009 that the Benito Juárez City Council and the Cancun Hotel Association created the Sea Turtle Protection Program based on NOM-059-SEMARNAT- 2010 standards. This program includes meticulous training for hotel personnel that are directly responsible for monitoring the visiting female turtles, collecting eggs, creating pens and releasing the young.
Sunset World Group has actively participated in this program since its inception by training the Sunset Royal security staff, who recently updated its 2020 statistics and program data. The season began on June 1 with the arrival of a female Green Sea Turtle that spawned 90 eggs. There have been a total of 14,144 eggs in the pens. The first 78 hatched on July 25 and were released on July 26. To date, 222 turtles, all Green Sea Turtles, have been released. Turtles continue to arrive and eggs continue to hatch.
"Turtle releases were so popular with visitors that in some places they got out of control," said Enrique Caldas, Sunset World Group Corporate Prevention Manager, "That is why at Sunset Royal releases have been done exclusively by our security staff from boats far from the beach since 2018," he added.
