The Recently Introduced UGAs To Officially Appear on Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Labels
New York, New York (PRWEB) July 26, 2023 -- New York, New York, July 26, 2023 – The Additional Geographical Units (UGAs) classification system was passed by an overwhelming majority in 2021 by the assembly of members of the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium, to differentiate and highlight the 11 units of the Chianti Classico region. This system was introduced to strengthen the relationship between Chianti Classico wines and their unique territorial origins, reinforcing quality and local identity.
The 11 villages were identified based on meeting one or more of the specific criteria, such as oenological recognizability, historical authenticity, renown, and significance in terms of environmental factors and human-related aspects: San Casciano, Greve, Montefioralle, Lamole, Panzano, Radda, Gaiole, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Vagliagli, Castellina, San Donato in Poggio.
Currently only Gran Selezione wines may adopt the UGA status. Two amendments to the Chianti Classico production regulation were in fact published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale on July 1, 2023. The first about the allowance to use the UGA term on Gran Selezione labels, which has come into force immediately, while the second will apply from the 2027 vintage onwards. This will require all Gran Selezione wines to be made with a minimum of 90% Sangiovese (the current minimum is 80%) and the remaining 10% with indigenous varieties only. The time-frame will allow wineries to replant or regraft their vines if needed to comply with the new regulation.
“This is an historic achievement for the denomination,” said the President of the Chianti Classico consortium Giovanni Manetti, “Now consumers will finally be able to choose wines produced in a specific UGA and fully appreciate the subtle differences inherent in the Black Rooster region. This represents a new step towards a greater appreciation of the unique characteristics of the Chianti Classico territory”.
