Why: New Earth got its humble beginnings in a Hollywood coffee shop, the Rocotitlan Café, on the corner of Wilton and Fountain. Every Monday, rain or shine for two years, artists and expressionists spoke their truth on an open stage in front of an audience that received them with love, compassion and understanding. Dubbed “Expression Mondays,” this is New Earth’s origin story.
New Earth founder and president Dr. Harry Grammer launched Expression Mondays as a platform for local spoken word artists and talents to highlight and cultivate their gifts. Grammer shares, “Expression Mondays was the seed. New Earth is the oak tree it became. Our core principles of expression, education, environment, and wellness were born in the tiny café where we held the open mic. Those values are the soil from which we have reached 35,000 young people over the past 20 years.”
At that café, Grammer and friends passed around a hat to collect donations, recruited the first board, and formed the first program, F.L.O.W., which is still taught today at probation camps, schools and at the New Earth Campus. Now a comprehensive resource center, New Earth offers a wealth of support services including educational programs leading to high school diplomas, innovative workforce training encompassing tech skills and entrepreneurship, captivating arts experiences, and holistic care management, among an array of other transformative offerings.
“Join us to celebrate 20 years of longevity, Expression, resilience, and being UNSTOPPABLE and UNBREAKABLE, and how a weekly open mic evolved into a successful nonprofit that has transformed the lives of over 35,000 young people,” adds Grammer.
