“School’s Out For Summer” Survey Reveals How Educators Spent Their Summer Break
Montpelier, VT (PRWEB) August 25, 2016 -- A national survey of teachers, administrators and other K-12 school employees found that educators spent the largest portion of their summer break preparing for the upcoming school year.
Nearly 80% of respondents (79.4%) indicated that they would be dedicating a portion of the summer months to their job. These respondents used an average of 47% of their vacation time to prepare for the upcoming year or work on other school-related assignments.
The first annual survey was conducted by National Life Group’s LifeChanger of the Year program during the month of June. LifeChanger of the Year is a national program that annually recognizes and rewards K-12 school district educators and employees who make a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence, and leadership.
“Many of the nominations we receive describe activities that our LifeChangers do during the summer to give back to their schools or communities,” said Mallorie Manosh, program director for LifeChanger of the Year. “We wanted to know more about how our LifeChangers spend their summer, whether they’re relaxing at the beach, volunteering in their communities or furthering their professional development. The results show that although educators do take some time to themselves during the summer, many of them dedicate their time to keeping students engaged and helping them succeed.”
One of the biggest themes of the survey was that educators are spending their time strengthening their connections with students.
One respondent commented, “I meet with various former and current students two or three times a week for mentoring and coaching. I also formed a club for students that meets weekly and helps the homeless and less fortunate twice a month.”
Additional key survey findings:
1) This summer, educators planned to read 5 books on average. The majority of respondents (78.4%) planned to read books related to education or professional development such as “Mindset” by Carol Dweck.
2) Respondents spent roughly 26% of their summer break on leisure activities (i.e, day trips, reading).
3) When asked what resources they used as educators, the top three responses were Teachers Pay Teachers (17.9%), Google and Pinterest (tied at 15.9%).
4) When asked about their role in their district, 58.2% of respondents indicated that they were teachers or paraprofessionals, 31.2% said that they were administrators, and 10.6% selected other options.
