The First California Actos Trial Set to Begin; Actos Lawyer Jeff Nadrich Responds

Actos lawyer Jeff Nadrich discusses the upcoming Actos drug lawsuit in Los Angeles, for which jury selection is currently underway.

Jury selection is presently underway in the case of Cooper v. Takeda Pharmaceuticals America Inc. (CGC-12-518535, California Superior Court of Los Angeles), according to a February 19th Bloomberg article. The case surrounds 69-year-old Jack Cooper, a former Pacific Bell employee who developed bladder cancer in November 2011. Cooper contends that his bladder cancer came as a result of Actos use, and that the drug’s manufacturer—Takeda Pharmaceuticals—failed to properly warn consumers about the dangers associated with Actos use.

Takeda disputes the charges against them. “We empathize with the plaintiffs but believe that Takeda acted responsibly with regard to Actos,” D’Lesli Davis, one of Takeda’s lawyers, said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg. “Studies do not establish a causal link between Actos and bladder cancer.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has also warned the public that Actos use may be associated with a heightened risk of bladder cancer when used for a period longer than one year. The warning was issued on June 15, 2011, and was inspired in part by a French epidemiological study, which ultimately led to a nationwide ban of Actos in France.

Jeff Nadrich, a Los Angeles Actos attorney who represents clients nationwide, recently commented on the case of Cooper v Takeda Pharmaceuticals, saying, “Any time a new drug hits the market, it is imperative that consumers be made aware of all of the known risks, so that the general public and the medical community can make the most informed decisions about how to proceed.”

Nadrich believes that the evidence linking Actos to bladder cancer is conclusive, and he urges current Actos users to speak with their doctors about alternatives. He also urges anyone who has developed bladder cancer after taking Actos to speak with a qualified attorney.
