Almost 50 percent of job seekers will be putting more effort into their job search this summer, illustrating the 'new normal' of today's job market. Job seekers to stay active - no matter the season

A new survey, conducted by Addison Group, a Chicago-based professional staffing firm, reveals US workers’ attitudes about looking for new career opportunities during the summer months. Addison Group‘s 2013 US Workforce Survey found that almost half of US workers surveyed don’t plan to take a vacation from their job searches this summer.

“Initially, the survey results surprised us, since conventional wisdom tells us that hiring tends to slow down during the summer,” said Thomas Moran, CEO of Addison Group. “Our survey respondents may be illustrating the ‘new normal’ of today’s job market – that job seekers feel pressure to consistently work hard at developing a resume, networking and following up with hiring managers. They need to stay active – no matter the season.”

Conducted in June 2013, Addison Group’s survey asked more than 1,000 employed and unemployed workers about their job search plans during the summer months. Forty-nine percent of survey respondents said that summer is a great time to put more effort into their job search. Twenty-six percent were frustrated that hiring will come to a standstill and felt companies don’t recruit during the summer. Twenty-five percent of job seekers plan to enjoy the summer and put their job search on the back burner.

Other findings from the survey reveal:

  •     Workers are less willing to dial-up their job search in the summer as they grow older; 41 percent of respondents over age 45 said the summer is a great time to look for work, compared with 64 percent of those aged 18-29 and 50 percent of those aged 30-44
  •     Survey respondents who are employed are split on whether they will spend more time on their job search or relaxing in their bathing suit – 40 percent for each. Twenty percent of employed workers think hiring will come to a standstill
  •     Employed survey respondents were 7.5 times more likely to be relaxing in their bathing suit this summer in comparison to their unemployed peers
  •     Sixty-one percent of survey respondents who think the summer is a great time to put extra effort are classified as ‘Active’ or ‘Hunter’ job seekers
  •     Eighty-nine percent of survey respondents who said they’d be relaxing in their bathing suits were ‘Opportunistic’ or ‘Passive’ job seekers
  •     Thirty-four percent of the unemployed respondents said hiring will come to a standstill in the summer, delaying their ability to get the full-time work they desire

Survey Methodology
In June 2013, Addison Group conducted a Survey of more than 1,000 US workers to look at how they felt about searching for their next career opportunity. The survey specifically included US workers who were employed full-time, as well as unemployed workers interested in obtaining full-time work. Survey respondents were asked to identify themselves in one of four job seeker categories:
Hunter - I need to get a new job as fast as possible.
Active - I am always looking, networking and keeping my eyes open for a new job opportunity.
Opportunistic - I am willing to discuss new opportunities but I'm not actively looking for a new job.
Passive - I am happily employed and not looking for a new job opportunity.
