Biologge, AS and AquaBlok, Ltd., announce the completion of production and placement of several different innovative (activated carbon-based) products for sediment capping and in-situ treatment at the Biologge Field in Sandefjord Harbor, near Biologge’s headquarters.
The BioBlok Gate products were produced by Biologge in Norway in Mid-December, with the assistance of AquaBlok. They were installed at the Biologge Field, known to contain a variety of organic contaminants, including PCBs, tributyltin (TBT) and PAHs, in January 2011. Biologge will perform monitoring of results and comparison to baseline data collected during 2010. Some information regarding the installation will be presented at Battelle’s Sixth International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments in February.
The line of products produced, known as BioBlok® Gate products, utilizes the AquaBlok® patented composite particle system to coat aggregate materials with highly sorptive activated carbon, specifically a powdered activated carbon (PAC), together with additional fillers as needed. The PAC material is utilized rather than traditional granular activated carbon primarily due to its higher rate of adsorption of contaminants that may pass through the capping or treatment layer. The activated carbon-bearing composite particles can range in particle size from sand-sized granules up to much larger aggregates. The composite particles perform two critical functions. First, the aggregate core weight enables placement of the inherently hard-to-place activated carbon from the surface of the water to the contaminated sediment surface. Second, the coating of activated carbon on the aggregate core provides uniform distribution of a relatively low concentration of activated carbon throughout the placed mass of product particles. This enables greater control in spatially uniform placement of high–value reactive materials throughout a target thickness of thin layer, isolation caps or treatment layers and provides greater contact time.
AquaBlok and Biologge signed an agreement in 2007 to cooperate on products and product development for management and treatment of contaminated sediments. Norway has a national plan, “Clean and Rich Oceans”, that encompasses cleaning up the sea bottom that has been receiving contamination over a period of 100 years or more. In this work, the company’s line of capping products will improve the environmental conditions and reduce the risk of exposure of poisons to marine life and people.
BIOLOGGE AS is a Norwegian industrial and technology company based in Sandefjord, Norway. Biologge has, since its inception in 1998, researched and developed alternative solutions for managing contaminated sediments. Each contaminated location is different from the next and there is not one solution that is appropriate for all sites. Biologge sees that the solutions that the AquaBlok®-based technologies provide – and the products that jointly are to be further developed – will add to and improve the presently available options in Norway.
AQUABLOK, LTD., based in Toledo, Ohio, produces clay-based patented low permeability, thin capping products for the management, isolation and treatment of contamination in sediments. AquaBlok® has been successfully used at contaminated sediment sites, both within and outside the U.S. and its effectiveness has been evaluated by the US EPA under its Superfund Innovative Technologies Evaluation program. The USEPA noted that AquaBlok’s cap material may "enhance the chemical isolation capacity or otherwise decrease the thickness of caps, compared to sand caps". Capping products are available for use in both salt and fresh waters. AquaBlok also produces a wide range of additional products such as annular sealants for water and environmental wells, pond/reservoir/dam sealant materials, water treatment for phosphorous reduction (algae), and sealant products for landfills and for piping anti-seep collars for pipe and trench dam applications.
